Nutrition Advice vs. Misinformation, and how to spot the difference without a degree in nutrition

If you spend any time on social media, you’ve probably seen posts like:

  • “This ingredient is toxic”

  • “This oil causes inflammation”

  • “New study proves everything we thought was wrong”

It can feel convincing—especially when someone confidently cites a “study.”

But here’s the reality:

Not all studies mean what people say they mean.

And the good news is—you don’t need a nutrition degree to spot that.

There’s a lot of information out there—some of it good, some of it… not so much

Most misinformation doesn’t come from completely fake studies.
It usually comes from:

  • studies being taken out of context

  • results being overstated

  • or sources that aren’t very credible to begin with

So instead of trying to fact-check everything, it’s more useful to have a few simple filters.

Three things to look for when someone cites a “study”

1. Where was it published?

Not all journals are created equal.

Some studies are published in credible, peer-reviewed journals, where other experts review the research before it’s published.

Others end up in less credible journals that are basically pay-to-publish sites with little to no real review process.

A quick gut check:

  • Is this from a well-known, peer-reviewed journal?

  • Or is it from a site you’ve never heard of with unclear standards?

There’s even a resource called Beall’s List that tracks known predatory publishers.

If the source itself isn’t credible, the conclusions don’t mean much.

2. Does the study actually say what they claim it says?

This is very common.

Someone will:

  • reference a real study

  • but describe it in a way that’s more dramatic or different than the actual findings

For example:

  • A study shows a small, temporary effect → becomes “this causes inflammation”

  • A study in animals → becomes “this is harmful to humans”

If you take one extra step and look at:

  • the abstract

  • or even just the conclusion

you can often spot the mismatch pretty quickly.

If the claim sounds stronger than the study itself, it probably is.

3. How strong is the study itself?

This is where a little structure really helps.

Not all studies carry the same weight, and this is one of the biggest sources of confusion online.

Here’s a simple hierarchy of evidence:

Most reliable:

  • Meta-analyses & systematic reviews
    (These combine results from many studies and give a big-picture view)

  • Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs)
    (Actual human experiments comparing one thing vs another)

Moderately helpful:

  • Prospective cohort studies
    (Following large groups of people over time to see patterns)

Early-stage / limited:

  • Animal studies

  • Cell or lab studies

Animal studies are important—they’re often the first step in research.
But they’re meant to guide future human studies, not be the final answer.

Simple takeaway:
The stronger the study design, the more confidence we can have in the results.

A more grounded way to think about nutrition

Instead of reacting to every new headline, it helps to zoom out.

When you look at the total body of evidence, the big picture is usually pretty consistent:

  • Whole, minimally processed foods tend to support health

  • Balance matters more than any one ingredient

  • Long-term habits matter more than short-term effects

  • Extremist diets generally are not great for you

Final thought

Nutrition science is always evolving—and that’s a good thing.

But it also means:

One study rarely tells the whole story.

A little curiosity and a few simple filters go a long way.
